I prefer fruit scones, layered with cream and jam, but a savoury cheese scone is nice too - especially when still warm from the oven and coated in butter.

This will make 6 reasonable sized scones

Cooking Time

Prep: 15 mins
Cooking: 15 mins
Total: 30 mins

  • 225g self raising flour
  • 55g butter/margarine
  • 25g grated Cheddar cheese
  • 150ml milk
  • salt (a pinch of)

  1. Preheat the oven to 220c
  2. Lightly grease a baking sheet
  3. In a bowl, mix together the flour and salt
  4. Mix/rub in the butter
  5. Stir in the cheese
  6. Stir in the milk in order to get a soft dough
  7. Empty onto a floured work surface
  8. Knead lightly and then flatten into a (roughly) 2cm thick pane
  9. Use a 5cm cookie cutter to stamp out some rounds and place onto the baking sheet
  10. Knead the remainder of the dough together and then flatten out again to cut out more
  11. Brush the tops with a little milk
  12. Bake for 12-15 mins until they've risen well and are golden
  13. Cool on a rack
