Sausage and Mash Pie

Basically: Bangers and Mash, as a pie

This meal can easily be prepared in advance (just add 15 minutes to the cooking time if you're pulling it out of the fridge), and doesn't require too much prep (the majority of the time really, is waiting for the spuds to boil)

You don't need to use the best, most expensive sausages, as they're being cooked in other flavours, but try not to go with the absolute cheapest either as they tend to be a pain to cook

Cooking Time

Ingredients

  • 12 Sausages
  • 3 Carrots
  • 1 Onion (large)
  • 5 Potatoes (large)
  • Frozen Peas (optional)
  • 1/4 block cheese
  • Large knob of butter
  • Milk
  • Gravy granules (preferably Onion Gravy)
  • 1 pint water
  • Dried Rosemary
  • Ground Black Pepper (optional)

Method

  1. Peel and chop the potatoes, then put them in a large pan to boil
  2. Peel and chop the carrots into thick discs
  3. Peel and chop the onion into chunks
  4. Grate the cheese into a bowl
  5. Set the oven pre-heating to 180c
  6. Sprinkle some dried rosemary into the bottom of a casserole dish
  7. Put a little bit of oil in a frying pan and start frying the sausages
  8. Once the sausages have browned slightly, add the onion and lightly fry them
  9. Boil the kettle with a pint of water
  10. Put 8tsp of gravy granules (check the amount needed on the packet) into a large mixing bowl, and stir as you pour in the boiling water
  11. Stir the gravy well to mix and avoid lumps
  12. Add the chopped carrot to the frying pan
  13. Carefully pour the gravy into the frying pan and stir
  14. If you're adding peas, now's the time
  15. Raise the heat slightly to bring the temperature up, and then lightly simmer
  16. Check the potatoes with a fork, once they're soft, drain into a colander and then dump back into the pan
  17. Add the large knob of butter to the saucepan with the potatoes
  18. Take a moment to snigger at use of the phrase "large knob"
  19. Add a small splash of milk to the saucepan
  20. Thorougly mash with a potato masher
  21. Carefully lift the sausages out of the frying pan and put them into the casserole dish (however they'll best fit)
  22. Carefully pour the contents of the frying pan over the top, and use a fork to make sure carrots and onion are evenly distributed
  23. Spoon mashed potato on top, and use a fork to spread it so that it completely covers the sausage mix underneath
  24. If you like pepper on mash, grind some black pepper over the top
  25. Sprinkle the grated cheese over the top of the potato
  26. Put onto the top shelf of the oven for 30 mins (put a baking tray on the shelf underneath to catch any gravy that escapes)
  27. Serve on it's own, or with steamed veg
